How to Use Social Media When Getting a Divorce

Divorce Lawyer

These days, social media is a huge part of many people’s lives. They use social media to post photos of their adventures, stay in contact with loved ones and share details about their life. However, if you’re in the middle of a divorce, you have to be a little more careful about how you use your social media sites. Otherwise, you could jeopardize your divorce case. Here are some tips for using social media when getting a divorce.

Avoid Talking Badly About Your Spouse

It’s common for people to use social media to vent their frustrations. However, it’s a big mistake to use your social media accounts to talk poorly about your spouse. The judge may frown upon this. Badmouthing your spouse on social media will do nothing to help your case, so it’s best to avoid it.

Do Be Cautious About the Photos You Post

Many people take to Facebook and Instagram to post photos of themselves out and about. When you’re going through a divorce, you have to be more cautious about the types of photos you post. While it’s perfectly fine for you to post a photo of yourself and some friends having dinner, photos that question your character shouldn’t be on your social media. For instance, if you have kids, it might not be wise to post a photo of you drinking alcohol at a bar. If the other side gets ahold of these photos, they may use them against you in court. Your spouse’s lawyer may try to argue that you aren’t a responsible parent, which may jeopardize your chance of getting custody.

Don’t Post About Your Recent Purchases

It may be exciting to talk about the new vehicle you just purchased or the vacation you booked on social media. However, you shouldn’t talk about the purchase you’ve made when you’re going through a divorce. This is especially true if you’re hoping to receive spousal support. The other side may claim that you don’t need support if you’re making such purchases.

Change Your Privacy Settings

If you’re going through a divorce, it’s a wise decision to change your private setting to the highest levels. This way, fewer people will be able to see what you post. Additionally, ask your friends and family not to tag you in photos.
